Mairead Keane, R.N., Takes Life-saving Action
At around 8 p.m. on Christmas, Resident Care Specialist Mairead Keane received a call about an unresponsive resident at Chestnut Park at Cleveland Circle. She arrived at the resident’s side within a minute and started CPR while talking to a 911 operator.
Mairead continued CPR as one resident care associate (RCA) retrieved the automated external defibrillator and another RCA waited for emergency medical personnel at the community’s entrance. As EMS personnel arrived, the resident’s pulse returned, and he opened his eyes.
“He was alert and communicating as medical personnel transported him to the hospital, which confirmed that he had a massive heart attack,” Mairead says.
Mairead’s quick response saved the life of the resident, who had been living in the Benchmark community since 2011. Looking back, a humble Mairead recognized the support of others in the community during those critical moments.
“Everything happened so fast,” she recalls. “I’m grateful that I was in the right place at the right time and could help.”
Although the resident, a beloved member of the Chestnut Park community, recently passed away, he maintained an active quality of life until the end.
The actions of Mairead and her fellow Chestnut Park associates offer a great example of how we are Better Together.
“Mairead also exemplifies being Called to Care for our residents, families and associates,” says Executive Director Eli Kathein. “We are so proud she is a member of our Benchmark family.”
Thank you, Mairead, and all our caring nurses for embodying our Benchmark values and spirit.
