Coachman Square Resident Celebrates 100th Birthday
Coachman Square at Woodbridge, a Benchmark Senior Living community, happily celebrated the 100th birthday in March of Gladys Lipkin of Hartford, Conn, a five-year resident of the Connecticut community.
Gladys earned a teaching degree from Central Connecticut State University and taught first grade, taking pride in turning her students into strong readers who could write stories. She also worked at J.C. Penney for 30 cents an hour to help her brother, Samuel, attend medical school.
When her fiancé, Phillip, returned from serving in the Army at the end of World War II, they married and opened Gem Specialty, a wholesale costume jewelry company in New Haven. Gladys loved managing the inventory while Phillip worked with the manufacturers.
The business provided a good living, and Gladys enjoyed having access to all the costume jewelry she wanted!
In addition to the joy of raising their daughter, Roxanne, Phillip and Gladys loved traveling; Pompano Beach and South America were favorite destinations.
