Giving Back at the Farmer’s Market
Every Sunday through mid-October, the heart of North Andover, Mass., comes alive with the popular North Andover Farmer’s Market. On July 16, Chef Darrell Swift, Senior Director of Dining Services at Ashland Farm at North Andover, gave a cooking demonstration in a Benchmark booth. Darrell is featured in our “I’m Engaged” campaign.
Chef Darrell used herbs and vegetables purchased at the market to make vegetable pancakes, one of his favorite recipes. They were a big hit. Anyone inspired by the free sample was invited to take a recipe card:
Jennifer Anthony, Director of Community Relations at Ashland Farm, knows North Andover. It’s been her family’s hometown for 20 years. For some time, residents talked about starting a farmer’s market. When it finally became a reality, Jennifer met with the market’s leader, town selectman Phil DeCologero, to discuss how Ashland Farm could participate. She learned that Phil was considering a cooking demonstration by a restaurant chef. “People don’t associate chefs with senior communities,” says Jennifer. “So Phil was surprised to learn that we had a great chef. I was thrilled when he offered us a booth with no rental fee, plus free advertising on the farmer’s market’s popular Facebook page and in an email blast.”
The farmer’s market is located across the street from the North Andover senior center and a large senior living complex, making it an ideal place to meet and mingle with seniors. In the Ashland Farm booth, Jennifer distributed community brochures, flyers for upcoming community events, copies of Chef Darrell’s “I’m Engaged” story and handouts from the community’s Live Well at Home event held last spring.
