Shortly after Hurricane Irma battered the Caribbean, Hurricane Maria wrought even more devastation. Thousands of people struggled in the aftermath, including families of many of our fellow associates. Through the One Company Fund (OCF), we helped the families of 52 associates with a total of $27,785 in hurricane relief grants. Here’s a look at a few of the grant recipients:

Josepha Brilus

Resident Care Associate Josepha Brilus has worked at Crescent Point at Niantic (Connecticut) for 16 years. As Hurricane Maria approached, Josepha’s mother and brother had to evacuate their home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. A few days later they returned to a home with a damaged roof. Josepha received an OCF grant, which her mother and brother used to repair their roof.

“They were so happy to receive our help,” says Josepha. “I don’t know of a company that would do this. It is so good to work for Benchmark.”

Anicie Labady

With 11 years at Benchmark, Anicie has 15 family members in St. Martin, including her brother and sister-in-law. After their home was flooded, an OCF grant to Anicie for her family allowed them to move into an apartment and buy food.

Yamaira Mendez

A 17-year associate, Yamaira has more than 50 family members in Puerto Rico. When the eye of Hurricane Maria passed just north of the island, flooding and high winds severely damaged their homes and destroyed many of their possessions. Now, members of Yamaira’s immediate family must buy gas for their generator and ice every day. It’ll be at least another month before power is restored. “The money from Benchmark was a very large amount for my family,” says Yamaira. “They are so grateful.”

Anicie and Yamaira are among the 11 associates at The Village of Buckland Court, in South Windsor, Conn. receiving OCF grants for families impacted by the hurricanes—the highest number of any community. “Everyone at The Village of Buckland Court is an advocate for OCF,” says Executive Director Doug Murphy. “We share stories of grant recipients at our fundraisers., and we exceed our OCF giving goal every year. Although we have a lot of grant recipients, our community contributes more to OCF than we receive in grants.”

At Buckland Court, OCF helps create a strong culture that sets Benchmark apart as an employer. “OCF is made by the people for the people,” says Doug.
