Benchmark Dominates CALA Awards

Benchmark Dominates CALA Awards

Every year the Connecticut Assisted Living Association (CALA) recognizes assisted living employees who go above and beyond in caring for Connecticut’s seniors. The CALA Outstanding Resident Service Awards are open to all employees, from food service to receptionists.

In June, Benchmark associates won and impressive four out of ten CALA Outstanding Resident Service Awards.

Congratulations to these outstanding Benchmark associates:

Marie Decoste
Lead Aide, Academy Point at Mystic
Five years with Benchmark

As a Harbor resident’s time to pass was approaching, Marie Decoste made sure the resident was comfortable in her bed. She placed pillows printed with family pictures around her and began to massage her hands with lotion. Without knowing if the resident could hear her voice, Marie gently assured her that her family was with her.

“Although it’s so sad,” says Executive Director Bonnie Pollard-Johnson, “Marie makes the end of life process dignified. When the family arrives, they see their loved one at peace.”

Melissa Hienzman
Clinical Coordinator, Academy Point at Mystic
Five years with Benchmark

When a Harbor resident was having a tough time, Melissa took her to a common area and engaged her in some activities. Away from what was bothering her and under Melissa’s warm and delicate guidance, the resident began to smile—prompting a bigger smile from Melissa.

Says Executive Director Bonnie Pollard-Johnson, “Melissa knows just how to make it right for each person.”

Winann Steinmetz
Program Director, Carriage Green at Milford
Five years with Benchmark

The internet opens new worlds for seniors. With Winann as their expert guide, residents at Carriage Green at Milford learn to keep in touch with friends and family, find family histories, church news, veteran happenings and old songs. She teaches groups and gives individual instruction to residents in their apartments. And every Monday night, Winann oversees Skype sessions during which residents and their families experience the joy of seeing each other’s faces.

“In addition to being our community’s computer coach, Winann runs an incredible range of programs,” says Executive Director Doris Quagliani. “Activities like her weekly discussion group, monthly craft night and a trivia night with families draw residents out of their apartments.”

Bernadette Tarzia
Care Nurse Supervisor-RN, BSL at Ridgefield Crossings
Three years with Benchmark

Bernadette was on-call during off hours when she learned that a hospice resident was experiencing anxiety and pain. When the hospice agency informed her it was unable to respond, Bernadette drove a long way to the community where she administered complex medications and cared for the resident in her final hours, garnering great appreciation from the resident’s family.

“Bernadette is devoted to our residents and their families,” says Resident Care Director Elizabeth Sorensen. “In addition to her excellent nursing skills, Bernadette’s strength in driving the assessment and service-plan process helped Ridgefield Crossings score 100% on our Quality Review for the first time.”
