Benchmark Lands on Inaugural List of 2018 Healthiest Employers in Connecticut

Recognized By Hartford Business Journal for Dedication to Associate Health and Safety

A happy employee is a healthy employee, which is why Benchmark, a leading provider of senior living services in the Northeast, is leading a charge to create the healthiest workforce in senior care. The company’s efforts were recently chosen by the Hartford Business Journal and Healthiest Employers Group for the inaugural 2018 Healthiest Employer in Connecticut award.

Benchmark’s healthy initiative was evaluated on six key categories: leadership commitment, foundational components, strategic planning, communication and marketing, programming and interventions, and reporting and analytics.

Since its founding 22 years ago, Benchmark has advocated for active, healthy lifestyles. Associates have access to coaching services and other resources focusing on self-management skills, health and prevention behaviors for changing unhealthy habits and controlling chronic health conditions. Over the last couple of years, the company has experienced a cultural shift, going a step further to foster a values-based culture built on empathy and mutual respect where all associates feel valued, engaged and are able to remain connected to what matters most in their lives.

“We believe that one’s emotional and mental health has a huge impact on physical health,” says Tom Grape, chairman and CEO of Benchmark, a Fairfield, Conn., native who founded the company in 1997. “Most companies encourage their associates to do things like eat better and be more active, but it really has to go a step further than that to be truly transformative. We are taking a more holistic approach and going deeper to address the root cause of the behaviors that can cause unhealthy habits before they even begin.”

Benchmark operates 18 independent living, assisted living and memory care communities throughout Connecticut, including Sturges Ridge of Fairfield, which opened in September, becoming the town's first assisted living community.
