Resident Care Assistant Earns Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology
Aissatou (Astrid) Ganou didn’t have any friends or relatives in the United States when she arrived as a guest worker from the African country of Burkina Faso. Although she lacked nearby support, her grit and determination helped her earn a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Southern Connecticut State University while working as a Resident Care Assistant at Carriage Green at Milford.
On May 18, Astrid’s mother, Gyrille, a social worker in Burkina Fasco, proudly attended Astrid’s commencement ceremony. The next day, the Carriage Green community celebrated with Astrid and her mother. Gyrille, who speaks French, conversed with the help of Maintenance Technician Delphin KalonJi, who served as her translator.
Astrid received flowers, a gift card, a cake and heartfelt congratulations from residents and associates.
“They asked me to bring my mother to the community. I thought they just wanted to meet her. We were both surprised. I appreciate all the company has done for me.”
With her degree, Astrid hopes to move up the ladder at Benchmark.
“We’re so proud of Astrid,” says Director of Business Administration Jody Fein. “She is a role model for us all.”
