BSL at Forge Hill Associate Completes NYC Marathon
The field of more than 52,000 competitors in the 2018 New York City Marathon included BSL at Forge Hill Server Mat Felton, who ran in support of a charity with a special good-luck charm from his Benchmark community.
“Before the race, one of our residents gave me a good-luck card with a patch sewn inside,” Mat says. “I brought it with me and took a photo of the patch at the finish with my medal.”
While the Franklin, Mass., resident has been running for seven years, he started competing in marathons last year.
“I had thought about running the New York City Marathon long before signing up,” Mat says. “It was something I really wanted to do.”
Mat registered for the 26.2-mile event as part of “Team Kidney,” benefitting the National Kidney Foundation, and committed to raising $3,000 for the charity through a personalized website. He also canvassed local businesses and hosted special events of his own, including a painting class and prize drawings.
“Dozens of people donated,” Mat says, “including several from BSL at Forge Hill.”
They all backed a strong runner: Mat’s official time was four hours, 14 minutes and 48 seconds — beating his previous record by a whopping 20 minutes! Mat’s family greeted him at the Central Park finish line while the BSL at Forge Hill team surprised him with a celebration upon his return home.
When he stopped by the room of the resident who gave him the patch to share marathon photos, Mat noticed a reminder for his own party starting that that very moment. He ran like a pro and made it for cake.
With the Nov. 30 fundraising deadline approaching, Mat is just shy of his $3,000 goal. To support the National Kidney Foundation, visit https://team.kidney.org/index.cfm and search “Mat Felton.”
